I love the small birds that flock to the garden. The robins and blue tits, blackbirds and sparrows, long-tailed tits and great tits. I even love the lumbering woodpigeons, with their comical expressions. So you may read with some surprise that I’ve welcomed their predator into the garden.
Introducing the sparrowhawk: This female found herself a perfect perch on the roof of our garage last week, and it was a privilege to see this raptor up close. I don’t know whether she will be making it a habit to patrol our property, but it’s nice to feel that there’s a little bit of wildness in a suburban garden.
